I turn 75 next month. Since I am now in another season of life, I am often asked this question: “What are the most important lessons you have learned over the years?” And although there are many important lessons learned, I usually say this: “Stay offense proof. Forgive quickly. Follow the model of Jesus when He hung on the cross and said, ‘Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do’” (Luke 23:34).
The Scriptures tell us clearly, “See to it that no one falls short of the grace of God and that no bitter root grows up to cause trouble and defile many” (Heb. 21:15). We all have the opportunity to receive grace from God to forgive quickly and stay free, or cling to unforgiveness and become defiled and bitter and remain in bondage. Remember, forgiving someone does not mean what they did or said was right. It was probably very wrong. But receiving grace from the Lord to forgive keeps us free!
