A leader is an influencer. We are all called to lead in some way by influencing those around us. The Bible records that most leaders were not seeking a position of leadership when God intervened in their lives and called them. Some whom the LORD called, like Moses and Gideon, did not think they could lead. Many felt that other people would be better leaders.

But if God calls us, we should be ready and willing to accept that call. In fact, my personal observation is that God is glorified by using people whom the world often perceives as unlikely leaders. Take Peter, for example. In modern terms, he was a blue-collar worker and an uneducated fisherman. He was not religious or part of the priesthood, and moreover, he often put his foot in his mouth and jumped to conclusions. Yet God used him in a major way!

The bottom line is this. As a believer in Christ and as a leader, we must know we are called by God. Then we can say, along with Paul the apostle, that we are “chosen by the will of God…” (1 Cor. 1:1). And when we are truly called by the LORD, this call will eventually be confirmed by those we are called to lead.
