My wife LaVerne and I have had the privilege of leading three different kinds of churches over the past 45 years; the community church, the megachurch, and the micro church. In 1980, when the first DOVE church started, we built teams to start the first two small groups in this new church plant and we were acknowledged as the team leaders of this small-group-based community church. But twelve years later, as our church grew to more than 2000 people meeting in 130 small groups, we had to learn how to lead a megachurch. After we decentralized and became a global family of churches in 1996, LaVerne and I started a new-micro church with mostly new believers in our house in our community, and we learned how to lead a micro church that eventually grew into a micro church network. Each of these leadership experiences of leading a megachurch, a community church, and a micro-church were so good for us. We learned how to lead and navigate both growth and struggle in these three different expressions of church. We found strengths and weaknesses in all three models. But regardless of the model, the real key was building a relationship with Jesus and one another, transforming our world from house to house, city to city, and nation to nation. You may ask, “Which is the best model?” My response is simple. The best model for you is the one you are called to.
