Jesus once said, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you…Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid” (John 14:27). Peace is the result of trusting God completely. The Bible also tells us that God’s peace surpasses human comprehension (Phil. 4:7). When we give up our right to understand and yield to Him, a distinct calmness will fill our hearts. Our trust is in Jesus, who is our only true source of peace. He dispels the fears that can grip us in an uncertain world. The Bible says, “Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts…And be thankful” (Col. 3:15). The word “rule” literally means “to be an umpire.” In other words, the peace of God in our hearts is an umpire that guides us to make right decisions. A lack of peace may be the Holy Spirit warning us that we should not move forward in a particular direction. The peace of God in our hearts is often described as a “gut” feeling that will lead us to make the right decision. And choosing to be thankful, regardless of how difficult life may be at the moment, helps us to hear the voice of God more clearly.
