One of the chief obstacles to surrendering to the Lord is our fear of losing control. A few years ago, a squad of police in our county entered a home to confiscate a computer that was being used for illegal activity. One of the men living in the home, in a state of fear and in an attempt to protect his accused brother, locked himself in his bedroom with the computer and refused to give it up. The police broke down the door, and after a scuffle, he was arrested and taken into custody. All he had to do was to give up the computer, but he could not clearly hear the officer’s voices or understand their motives, and fear kept him from surrendering.

Fear, which keeps us in a state of confusion or anxiety, keeps us from surrendering to the Lord. We must remember God’s words to us, “There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear” (1 John 4:18). He loves us! God wants to speak to us if we place ourselves in a position of continual surrender to Him. Listen to his voice in the midst of the noise and hear what he is saying. The act of surrendering allows for the hand of God to influence our thoughts and feelings so we can walk free in sweet surrender to Jesus.
